Bistek Tagalog: Beef Steak Filipino-style

It's Saturday and time once more for me to don my chef's hat (naks...hahaha). I'm sure all the Filipinos out there are familiar with Bistek Tagalog -- the Filipino version of the Western style steak. As usual, this is the result of the creativity of the Filipinos in order to stretch out this recipe to feed more people and makes use of native ingredients like calamansi.

I made use of sirloin steak sliced thinly and marinated it in a mixture of calamansi and soy sauce. Remove from the marinade and brown in oil for about 5 minutes. Add the marinade. Add soy sauce and a bit of water as needed. Top with pre-cooked white onions, sliced into rings. Serve over hot rice. Yummy!

Have a great weekend, ladybug

That looks so delicious! Now, that you mention how to cook real bistek tagalog, I'll teach our housemaids how to cook one! Now, I'm getting hungry! I was browsing through Major Tom's links and found your site! Now it's another additional read for me!=D

ceejoy> Ok na rin yung lemon. Di bale, dalaw ka ulit sa Pinas para makakain ka ng authentic recipe ng bistek. :-) Thanks for dropping by. :-)

snglguy> Hahaha...I've actually been toying with the idea of renaming my blog. Bahala na. Thanks snglguy, I had a nice weekend. Hope you had one too. :-)

jv> Thanks for dropping by! :-) You might wonder I was not more specific with the amount of the ingredients. I leave that up to the readers. When I first tried this dish, I followed the recipe in a cookbook. It was too sour for my husband. So, the amount of soy sauce and calamansi will have to depend on the taste of those who will eat. But it's better to err on the side of caution. Meaning, you can always add more ingredients in the end but it's difficult to subtract. :-) Happy eating!

Grabe, picture pa lang ang sarap na. Kakagutom.

myepinoy> Naubos nga agad eh. Gusto ko pa naman sanang magtira para painit kinabukasan. Pero di bale, ultimate compliment na yun sa nagluto. :-)

sidney> Thanks sidney. My husband loves this dish also. I'm glad to know that you've come to love eating Filipino dishes. I'm also happy that you have another blog which I can visit more often. :-)

ladybug said...

rey> Wow! I'm sure masarap luto ng wife mo. :-) Kung gusto mo ng mas maalat, mas dark ang kalalabasan ng bistek diyan. Kami kasi kailangan ng mag-ingat sa cholesterol eh kaya di pwedeng mashadong maalat.

wong jolene> Thanks for dropping by too! :-) Hope to see you around.

fellow weekend chef! hehehehe. yummy. the bistek tagalog is tricky noh? it should be the perfect blend of tangy and salty. i have a memory of my mom teaching me to prepare this one. she emphasized that her mom, my lola, specifically told her to saute the onions first, take them out, then fry the marinade-simmered beef, throw the pre-cooked onions into the slightly browning beef, then pour the sauce.

In that order, mare...hahahaha! to this day, that's how i prepare bistek.

ladybug said...

kyels> You're very welcome. Now you have one more additional dish to taste when you visit the Philippines. :-)

jennie> Thanks. :-) Hmmm...regarding pochero, di kasi ako marunong gumawa nun eh. You can get the recipe at this site- http://www.recipes.com.ph/show/putsero/

Good luck! :-)

max> Hi there! I'm glad you're feeling better. Thanks for dropping by! :-)

ling> Thanks for dropping by too! :-) Oh, we dont know each other personally. I was just bloghopping when I came across your site. I'm also a badminton aficionado like you. Hope to see you around. :-)

ladybug said...

vina> Poor you. Punta ka sa amin pakakainin talaga kita. :-) Hahaha... halika na.

da fatalists> Ouch...it will really hurt when you fall on a cement surface. That is also one of the reasons I don't wanna play on cement. Oh, your aunt is also a national player. You must be a good player also. If not, you can always ask her to teach you. :-) One of the advantages of being a relative. :-)

ladybug said...

jerome> Wow! Hahaha...generations na pala inabot yang recipe niyo ng bistek. I'm sure masarap yang luto mong yan. Hirap nga maghanap ng balance. Depende talaga sa panlasa ng kakain. Ang natutunan ko naman na recipes sa nanay ko eh mga ilocano dishes like diningding and pinakbet. :-)

hmmm. looks yummy! I'll try experimenting it sometime. I just found a book on filipino dishes in our shelf. I didn't know we had such book.

lazarus> Don't worry, it's just easy to do. Good luck and enjoy! :-)

Hey, thanks for the comment a little while back. I must confess that my badminton skills are almost equal to the way I got the set out of the back of the truck...awkward and painful. Lol, but I have fun nonetheless! That beef dish looks incredible, I'll have to try it sometime!
