Hapones?

Overheard on the radio this morning, a radio announcer interviewing Robert Dean Barbers, the General Manager of Philippine Tourism Authority:

Radio Announcer: Saan pong bansa nanggagaling ang pinakamaraming turista sa Pilipinas?

GM Barbers: Maraming turista ang nanggagaling pa rin sa U.S.

Radio Announcer: Ay, ang akala ko po ang nangunguna sa listahan ay ang mga Koreano.

GM Barbers: Pinakamarami pa rin ang galing sa US, sinusundan ng mga Koreano tapos mga Hapon.

Radio Announcer: Ahhh....so mga Americans, Koreans and Japans. (?!?!?!?! )

Rough translation:
Radio Announcer: From which country do we derive the most number of tourists?
GM Barbers: Majority of the tourists come from the United States.
Radio Announcer: Oh, I thought the list was topped by Koreans.
GM Barbers: We get the most number of tourists from the U.S., followed by Korea, then Japan.
Radio Announcer: Oh, so Americans, Koreans and Japans (??!?!?!?!)

Hmmm ... A mistake there?

It should be Japanese, noh?

Americans are first? Kinda surprising. They probably count visiting Filipinos with US passports as Americans...
Japans...hehehe...sandali, let's not judge the announcer, he's not a book!

I think he was right. Americans include every nationalities, including Koreans and Japanese. "Japans" sub for Hapones? Took a sharp ears to notice.

Ahhhhh... pwede yata sumaling Game KNB? yang announcer na 'yan. Dati, I heard Kris Aquino ask for countries with only one syllabe. She said France, Greece... and LAOS! AY la-os pala siya (both the country and Kris). :)

kyels> Yes...the announcer should have said "Japanese". It happens to the best of us. Sometimes, our minds move faster than our lips can handle. :-D

mita> I see your point. I agree, maybe they also count as tourists Filipinos who now hold US passports.

Regarding the announcer....hehehehe...I agree that he shouldn't be judged. Aba, pinasikat yata ni Ms. Melanie Marquez yang kasabihang iyan.....hahahaha.

abaniko> Wow!

ladybug said...

bugsybee> Honestly, probably because of my busy schedule, I don't see any of these nationalities around. Hope you had a nice time! :-D

vic> Yes, I also agree. Americans nowadays encompass people from all kinds of nationalities. It has been a melting pot of different cultures and ethnicities. I myself have lots of relatives who are now in the US and have become citizens there. When they visit us, they are probably regarded as Americans visiting the Philippines.

rey> Hahahaha....you're so funny. :-D

ladybug said...

toe> Ay...hahahaha...kakatawa naman yan. I don't think this announcer can join GAME KNB though.

So maraming hapon in english is japans....lol
